What are the key points in the production process of calcium propionate

Today, Jiangsu Aolikai Food Technology Co., Ltd. will introduce the content of calcium propionate to everyone. The key points of the production process of calcium propionate cover multiple aspects such as raw material selection, reaction condition control, separation and purification, equipment selection, and environmental protection and safety measures. These aspects collectively determine the yield, purity, and sustainability of the production process of calcium propionate.

Raw material selection and pretreatment are the foundation of calcium propionate production. In industry, calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate is often used as the calcium source, with calcium hydroxide being favored due to its high reactivity and low impurities. If calcium carbonate is chosen, it needs to be made into an aqueous suspension and refined to remove impurities such as magnesium and other heavy metals. Propionic acid, as another key raw material, must have a purity of over 99.5% to ensure the smooth progress of subsequent reactions. For the production of natural calcium propionate, propionic acid needs to be obtained through microbial fermentation, which requires the selection of specific strains (such as Propionibacterium) and is carried out in a strictly controlled fermentation tank system.

The control of reaction conditions is the core of calcium propionate production. In the neutralization reaction stage, propionic acid needs to be mixed with calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate in a certain proportion, heated to 70-100℃ under stirring conditions, and reacted for 2-3 hours. During the reaction process, temperature, reaction time, and reactant concentration must be strictly controlled to promote the reaction and evaporate excess water. At the same time, the pH value at the end of the reaction needs to be controlled between 7-8 to ensure the formation of calcium propionate and avoid the occurrence of side reactions. For the production of natural calcium propionate, parameters such as the type of carbon source, fermentation temperature, and strain activity must also be strictly controlled during the fermentation stage.

The separation and purification process is crucial for the purity of calcium propionate. After the reaction is completed, the generated calcium propionate needs to be separated from the reaction solution through methods such as centrifugal separation, filtration separation, or distillation separation. Subsequently, washing, drying, crushing, and screening steps are carried out to obtain calcium propionate products of different particle sizes. For the production of high-purity calcium propionate, refining equipment such as crystallizers, ion exchange columns, or adsorption towers are also required for further purification.

Equipment selection and environmental protection and safety measures cannot be ignored. Reactors should be made of corrosion-resistant and high-temperature-resistant materials (such as stainless steel and titanium), and designed as agitated tank, tower, or tubular types to meet process requirements. Separation equipment needs to ensure stable performance, good separation efficiency, and ease of cleaning and maintenance. During production, a closed production system should be adopted to reduce emissions of waste gas, wastewater, and waste residue, and to treat and recycle the generated pollutants.
